When coaching my clients, I often see four key issues that plague nearly every business, regardless of size.
1. Aimlessness: Lacking clear direction One of the biggest challenges I see is aimlessness—a lack of clear direction. When business leaders don’t align on priorities, or when they chase after every new opportunity, it creates confusion and inefficiency. It’s like a lion chasing mice instead of focusing on its main prey. The solution? Alignment. It’s crucial to get everyone in the company moving in the same direction with a shared mission and vision. When you align leadership and staff around clear goals, your business gains focus, making it easier to achieve long-term success. 2. Dead ends: Focusing on the wrong things The next big issue is dead ends—doing things that aren’t profitable or beneficial for the business. This could mean hiring the wrong employees, working in areas that are too far away, or taking on clients that don’t pay well. These dead ends drain resources and time. The solution here is standardization. By setting clear policies and standards about what you will and won’t do, you streamline operations and avoid wasted effort. Having clear standards for everything from hiring to daily operations can transform the way your business runs. 3. Gaps: Missing tools, technology, or people Another common problem is gaps in your business. These could be missing tools, technology, or even the right people. For example, many businesses hold back on buying or renting equipment that would drastically increase productivity. Or, they may lack the skilled workers necessary to push the business forward. The solution to gaps is integration. You need to integrate the right technology, tools, and people into your business to fill these gaps and boost efficiency. With the right resources in place, your business can run much more smoothly and efficiently. 4. Loops: repetitive tasks slowing you down Finally, there’s the problem of loops—repetitive tasks that slow down your business. A common example is manual timekeeping, which can involve multiple steps, from collecting paper timesheets to manually entering data. This wastes time and leaves room for errors. The solution here is automation. Automating these repetitive tasks not only saves time but also reduces errors and frees up your team to focus on more important work. Yes, there’s an upfront cost, but the return on investment is worth it. Automation reduces the need for extra administrative staff and ultimately increases your profit margins. Moving from PROBLEMS to SOLUTIONS Addressing these four problems—aimlessness, dead ends, gaps, and loops—can transform your business.
